Here's this weeks REMAKE/REMODEL challenge from Warren Ellis, and it's a humdinger. Here's the brief for "The Wire, The Animated Series":
"No, seriously. Some hideous legal loophole in Simon & Burns' contract. Your company has the rights to an animated-series spin-off of THE WIRE. This happens. Remember when there was going to be a BUFFY animated series?
And, you know, it only has to bear the most tangential relationship to the show.
OR it could be as close to the show as you want.
It can be any adaptation, re-imagining, re-genre-ing or...whatever the fuck you want, so long as it looks like it came from THE WIRE, right? So long as people can look at it and somehow trace it back to the original series. Anything you want.
Because you're the one who's been tasked with the initial concept designs.
SHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIT."
OOOOOOOKay... Well, I have to admit I had to do a bunch of research on this one, as I am a dork and have not watched this excellent show before, so this had a pretty steep learning curve for me. I decided to take this thing semi-old school and drop the concept square into early 70's Hanna Barbera territory. And if it's a cartoon, it's gotta have a wacky sidekick animal, right? So I designed it like an old Hanna Barbera title card they used in their cartoons.
Now I've gotta go and actually watch more of the real series; I've dug all the clips I've seen so far.
UPDATE: HOLY CRAP! Patton Oswalt just twitpic'd this image with the message "Somebody Please Do This!" [link]!/pattonoswalt/status/78144384419373056
UPDATE: Now with Omar, and a title that actually makes sense in context of the show.
