Artist's Comments

Another caricature for the ever expanding WhiteChapel "DRAW EACH OTHER" art thread. This one is from a photo of a girl named Oda Elisabeth, who posted a very cute picture of herself wearing this hat.
So, given my habit of making things into posters, here's another "propaganda" poster for...something. Not sure what, just that you would serve your country well doing your duty for her, the girl you left behind.

Very pretty--she could totally inspire me to war. :O

Great job. :)

Wierdly, this is actually the theme of a Soviet war song popular in WWII (and still sung every year on Victory Day). Katyusha.

Interesting. Is "Katyusha" the name of the song?

Yes. Because it's originally Russian (obviously) and in the Cyrillic alphabet, it is transliterated as Katyusha, Katiusha, or Katjusha. Here's a link to it:

Thanks for the link. I assume the lyrics have to do with fighting for one's country and also for the girl a soldier left back home?

The translation is:

"Apple and pear trees were blooming
Mist was creeping on the river
Katyusha set out on the banks
On the steep and lofty bank.

"She was walking, singing a song
About a grey steppe eagle,
About her true love,
Whose letters she was keeping.

"Oh, you song! Little song of a maiden,
Head for the bright sun.
And reach for the soldier on the far-away border
Along with greetings from Katyusha.

"Let him remember an ordinary girl,
And hear how she sings,
Let him preserve the Motherland,
Same as Katyusha preserves their love."

Thank you so much for all that work. That's a really great bit of knowledge to put with this image!

It wasn't work at all! I have multiple versions of that song saved in my Youtube favorites. I even made a photomanip series of it that's on dA. I happen to like Russian music, and when I see an image that so beautifully illustrates it, I just have to mention it. By the way, I like this poster more than the Axis poster. It's still a period piece, but it's somewhat atypical in the posing, the way the clothes are worn, the font (wonderful Soviet-inspired font, by the way). Everything about the style is atypical, yet so very fitting.
