Sorry, I should know there's no "h", my brain was on vacation.

Just got the full book digital proofs, am going over them very carefully now, so far so good.
Still shooting for mid September for the book to be in country, so I should have a comp copy for you soon after that.

unless you do.

I love the DJ octopus, man!!
Are they being manufactured, or was that just a custom-shop example, possibly photoshop?

I took some time to go through your gallery here with a more detailed eye. Here's some initial thoughts that came ot my mind:

1. Line Illustrations: you've got some good ideas; I would investigate working more with a more expressive or varied line. Right now, a lot of your drawings tend to look kind of flat with the flat colors and mono-width lines. A more expressive line would help to energize your illustrative work would pop more if you investigated some options in this direction.

2. Graphic design work: Again, good ideas, but maybe more variance in typographic elements. Right now, a few of your pieces (Brain Museum, Run store ad) seem to have the various elements (type, blocks of type, illustrative element) all occupying the same basic visual size, and thus all fighting for the attention, rather than allowing a hierarchy of the flow through the ad or logo. For instance, I like the symbol for the "Run Store", but I think the type with it just lies there, and doesn't really flow with it; it just looks like it's sitting next to it, not enhancing it. If you have a good mark, you don't have to saddle it with type elements that explain it.
My general rule of thumb with layouts is to treat them like a picture composition, seeing them with foreground, middle ground and background. That way, I can assign things to a hierarchy in the same way I arrange a comic panel, and I'm thinking of the type in that same way of what needs to be seen first, what should follow next, etc.
Of the entire collection of your pieces here, the best one is the Joe Strummer poster for the reasons I mentioned above.

OVERALL: You seem to be getting your footing, so I'd just say keep doing more, more, more. The saying is "you've got 100 bad pages to get out of your system before the good stuff can come out. So start getting through those first 100 as soon as possible." It sounds a little defeating, but truthfully, it's an accurate thought process.
I did 75 logo variations for a big freelance job recently, and out of those, I only felt confident showing the client 2 of them for the first presentation. I hold myself to that same rule as much as I can, knowing that I needed to get 73 "meh" ideas out before those 2 good ones got out. You're young, you've got the time; now is when you should be hammering out art and putting your time in the trenches. It's actually fun (and hard work) but oh so worth it.

Hope those are some helpful pointers that move you forward. Let me knwo if you have other specific questions.
Paul

Hi Paul, it was good stopping by at the rocket star with flyk. You have some very valid opinions and good critique. I know you gave me a quick one before, but if it isn't too much to ask, I would like perhaps a more involved review of my gallery. Thank you for your time and help.

Thank you so much for your commentary :)
*PaulSizer:iconPaulSizer: Apr 28, 2008, 5:37:41 AM
Thank you. I really appreciated your handling of the extremes you encountered in the comments on your work. It was nice to see you not buckling under with the more puritanical elements, but also being honest in stating your intent and purpose for what motivated your own work and photography. With the kind of images you produce, it's a thin line for some people in their perception of the nude in photography, and the extremes always are the first to make their voices heard. I'm glad to see you being honest and frank with your work, not hiding behind flowery terms but stating simply why you work, what's important/fun/erotic to you. Knowing an artist's motivation is always cool.

Keep up the good work; there's some really nice nuances in your work, good craft and nice attention to details of lighting and composition (which is what initially caught my eye). There's also a casualness to it that makes it approachable as well, and that's a nice change from stiff, predictable studio work.

I think your work looks nice from a distance, but I when I got close up, I was thrown off a little. Proportions were off a little, and there were some technical issues. but I think you have a much better grasp on what you are doing than I do. I would like some tips and a critique of my gallery if you could. I really want to improve. I don't even know where to start coloring the way you do.

Geez, if you can afford a Cintiq, go for it. I've been mega happy with my 9x12 intuos, so both are great.
